Carboxytherapy
Carboxytherapy is the administration of carbon dioxide gas (CO2) into the skin or below the skin for cosmetic and therapeutic reasons. Carboxytherapy originated in the early 1900’s when people with leg ulcers noticed the ulcers healing after bathing regularly in the baths at Royat, France. These baths were found to be rich in carbon dioxide or CO2. Our hemoglobin has a stronger affinity for CO2 then for oxygen (O2) and so binds CO2 and releases O2, hyper-oxygenating the tissue. CO2 injection also causes a mechanical injury that breaks down tissue and stimulates collagen and elastin production. This can lead to thickening of the epidermis, smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles, and breakdown of fatty tissue, scar tissue and more.
Carboxytherapy can be used cosmetically to treat dark circles under eyes, loose skin around eyes, facial wrinkles and folds, stretch marks, hypertrophic scars, burn scars, acne and chicken pox scars and more. Carboxytherapy can also improve the appearance of cellulite, skin laxity and body contours alone or as an adjunct to radiofrequency or mesotherapy. It can also be used in combination with other treatments to maximize results.
