Rhinoplasty

Who is a Candidate for Rhinoplasty? Many men and women are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their nose. This may be a life long concern or may be due to trauma. Those individuals looking to improve their nasal appearance and are otherwise healthy are candidates for rhinoplasty.

Planned Results: An improvement in the size and shape of the nose and improved facial balance and harmony.

Description of the Procedure: Rhinoplasty is completed under general anesthetic. You will require an adult to drive you home and stay the night with you.

There are two approaches to rhinoplasty: open and closed. Each has advantages and disadvantages. This will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Each rhinoplasty surgery is different and is customized to the anatomy and goals of each patient. Some patients will require refinement of the tip, or the dorsum and some will require fracture and repositioning of the nasal bones. The best surgery for your nose will be determined at your consultation.

Recuperation and Recovery: Your nose will be in a splint for one week to 10 days after the surgery. You can expect some bruising, swelling and discomfort. You will be sent home with prescription medication to keep you comfortable. You are encouraged to sleep with your head elevated and may use icepacks to help with the swelling. Do not blow your nose after the surgery until advised that you may do so by Dr. Meathrel. You are encouraged to return to your usual daily activities as soon as possible, but avoid any activities that would increase your blood pressure for 48 hours. Prolonged bed rest can lead to serious complications and therefore it is important that you do not remain inactive for long. It can take several months before all of the swelling resolves from your nose. You should avoid contact sports for at least 6 weeks following surgery.

Options and Considerations: Rhinoplasty surgery can be combined with other facial surgeries, in particular chin augmentation, in order to improve your over all facial balance.

Notes: Altering the shape of the nose can result in an alteration of the shape and projection of the lips, and change the appearance of the position of your eyes (although the surgery will not actually move your eyes).
