Otoplasty (Prominent Ears)

Who is a Candidate for Otoplasty: Are you bothered by the appearance of your ears? Prominent ears are a very common complaint that can lead to social embarrassment. In many cases a minor surgical procedure under local anesthetic can drastically improve your ear appearance.

Planned Results: Improved appearance of ears

Procedure Description: Several measurements of your ears will be taken and special markings will be placed on your ears. Local freezing will then be placed and the skin sterilized. Incisions will be made on the back of your ears. Permanent sutures will be used to reshape your ears and the incision closed with dissolving sutures. A dressing will be applied.

Recuperation and Healing: You will have minor swelling, bruising and discomfort which may be treated with acetaminophen or ibuprofen. You may return to your usual daily activities immediately but avoid any activities that increase your blood pressure for 24-48 hours. Leave the dressing in place until you are seen in follow up. You will need to sleep with a special headband and avoid contact sports for 4 weeks after the procedure.

Insurance: Otoplasty is covered by OHIP for children under 18 years of age, OHIP covered procedures and consults will be completed at Dr. Meathrel’s Hotel Dieu Hospital office and require a referral from your family physician.
