Liposuction

Who is a Candidate for Liposuction: Liposuction can be used to decrease fat deposits on the abdomen, neck, arms, thighs and other locations. It can also be combined with other body contouring procedures such as: tummy tuck, breast lift, thigh lift, lower body lift, brachioplasty, neck or facelift. If you are otherwise healthy and have good skin tone, you may be a candidate for liposuction. Not all patients are good candidates for liposuction – Dr. Meathrel will determine if liposuction is right for you are your consultation.

Planned Results: Decreased fat deposits and improved body contour

Procedure Description: Dr Meathrel uses tumescent power-assisted liposuction technique. Liposuction is a safe procedure when performed by an officially trained and experienced surgeon like Dr Meathrel. In most cases the procedure is completed under general anesthetic; however in certain circumstances the procedure may be completed under local anesthetic. You will have small 1 cm incisions in the region of liposuction that will be closed with dissolving sutures.

Recuperation and Healing: Following the procedure you will have some swelling and possible bruising in the areas. You will be required to wear special compression garments following the surgery and these can be obtained at U Cosmetic. You will be encouraged to return to your usual daily activities the following day, especially walking short distances. Prolonged bed rest following liposuction can lead to complications and it is therefore very important that you return to usual activities as quickly as possible. Avoid any activities that will increase your blood pressure for 48 hours. The length of recovery time depends on the extent of liposuction and the combination of procedures. This will be discussed with you in detail at your consultation.

Options and Considerations: You may be a candidate for Ultrashape noninvasive body contouring treatments. This will be determined at your consultation.

Notes: Liposuction can result in temporarily decreased sensation in the areas of liposuction. All potential complications will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Who is a Candidate for Abdominoplasty: There are many variations of tummy tucks available depending on how much refinement of your abdomen is desired. Abdominoplasty corrects excess skin, fat and abdominal muscle weakness. Tummy tuck is often combined with liposuction to give optimal results.

Planned Results: A flattening and improved contour of your abdomen and waist.

Procedure Description: Prior to the procedure markings will be placed on your abdomen to mark out the tissue to be removed. Under a general anesthetic, the excess skin and fat will be removed from your abdomen and the underlying abdominal muscles repaired if necessary. The incision will be placed low on your abdomen and will be hidden by a bathing suit; the length of the incision varies depending on how much tissue needs to be removed. You may also have an incision around your belly button – this will be discussed at your consultation. The incisions will be closed with dissolving, internal stitches that do not need to be removed. You will have 2 drains in place to ensure that no fluid collects behind the incision – these will stay in place for approximately 2 weeks.

Recuperation and Healing: You will have soreness, swelling and bruising, You will be discharged with prescription medication to keep you comfortable. You will be provided with guidance on how to care for the drains until they are removed. You will also be required to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks following the surgery and this will be provided by U Cosmetic. You will not be able to stand up straight for the first several days following the procedure however it is very important that you do not stay in bed for prolonged periods. Prolonged bed rest can lead to serious complications, such as blood clots in your legs and therefore it is very important to move around and walk short distances. You will need to avoid abdominal exercises for 6 weeks following the surgery.

Options and Consideration: You may be a candidate for liposuction or Ultrashape noninvasive body contouring treatments, this will be determined at your consultation.

Notes: Tummy tuck procedure will result in numbness along the scar and may alter sensation of the skin above and below the scar. Future weight gain or loss will alter the appearance and may require surgical revision. Abdominoplasty is not recommended if you plan on future pregnancies. All potential complications will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Breast Augmentation

Who is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation: Many women are dissatisfied with the size and shape of their breasts, this may be due to age, pregnancy, weight changes or a general dissatisfaction. If you are otherwise healthy and looking for cosmetic improvement in the appearance of your breasts, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation. Any woman who is medically fit for surgery, who is not currently pregnant or breast feeding and has realistic expectations is a candidate

Planned results: Breast augmentation using either saline or silicone implants can increase the size of the breasts, improve shape and symmetry. Many women feel more comfortable and confident following breast augmentation surgery.

Description of the Procedure: The surgery is done as day surgery under general anesthetic. You will need a ride home from an adult over age 18 years of age, and an adult to stay with you overnight.

There are several different incisions that can be used to place the implants: inframammary (in the crease below your breast), periareolar (along the inferior margin of the pigmented aspect of your nipple areolar complex), and axillary (in your armpit). The appropriate incision will be determined at your consultation, the incisions also may vary depending of the need for a breast lift at the same surgery or based on previous scars already present on your breasts.

There are 2 different types of breast implants available: saline and cohesive gel silicone (gummy bear implants). The advantages and disadvantages of each type of implant will be discussed with you at your consultation and you will have the ability to see samples of each type of implant. Dr, Meathrel uses implants manufactured by Mentor.

Implants may also be placed either submammary (below the breast tissue) or submuscular (below the pectoralis major muscle). The advantages and disadvantages of each placement will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Recuperation and Healing: You will have a dressing covering the incisions that will stay in place for one week. You will be required to wear a special bra that will be provided by U Cosmetic. You will have some discomfort, swelling and minor bruising and will be sent home with prescription medications to keep you comfortable. You are encouraged to return to your usual daily activities as soon as possible, prolonged bed rest can lead to serious complications and it is important to resume walking short distances and gentle activity within 24 hours of the surgery. You should avoid heavy upper body activity for one month following the surgery (eg heavy lifting, or heavy upper body workouts). You will be required to do special postoperative massaging exercises of your implants starting 1 week following the surgery and detailed instructions will be provided to you by Dr. Meathrel.

Options and Consideration: A mastopexy (breast lift) may be recommended at the same time to improve the overall cosmetic outcome.

Notes: Breast augmentation may result in permanent decreased sensation of your breasts and may interfere with future breastfeeding. Gravity continues to work on augmented breasts in the same fashion as on natural breasts, breast augmentation does not stop the aging process and future procedures may be required to keep your breasts aesthetically pleasing. Future weight gain or loss, or pregnancies will result in changes to the breasts and may require future surgical procedures. All potential complications will be discussed with you at your consultation. Breast augmentation does not alter your risk to develop a future breast cancer. Mammogram screening can be completed on augmented breasts with special views, you must inform the mammogram technician that you have breast implants in place.

Mastopexy (Breast lift)

Who is a candidate for Breast Lift? Many women suffer from deflation and sagging of their breasts either as a result of age, pregnancies or breastfeeding. You may be a candidate for a breast lift procedure if you are dissatisfied with the drop in your breasts. Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding or plan future pregnancies are not candidates for mastopexy.

Planned Results: Improved positioning and shape of the breasts.

Description of the Procedure: Mastopexy is completed under general anesthetic as a day surgery. You will require an adult to drive you home and stay with you overnight.

There are several different incisions that can be used for mastopexy: periareolar (around the nipple areola complex), vertical (around the nipple areola complex and down the front of the breast) and anchor or inverted T pattern (around the nipple areola complex, down the front of the breast and along the under surface of your breast). The incision is based on the degree of lift required, previous incisions on your breasts and whether implants are being placed at the same time.

Regardless of the incisions, they will be closed with dissolving, internal stitches. You will have dressings on your breasts that will stay in place for one week.

Recuperation and Recovery: You will have some discomfort, swelling and bruising, You will be given prescriptions for medications to keep you comfortable at home. You are encouraged to return to your usual daily activities as soon as possible. Prolonged bedrest or inactivity can lead to complications. Avoid activities that increase your blood pressure for 48 hours and avoid heavy lifting or upper body workouts for 4 weeks after the surgery. You will be required to wear a special support bra for one month after the surgery and this will be provided by U Cosmetic. Kelocote scar gel is recommended to enhance the scar healing.

Options and Considerations: In some cases breast augmentation may be recommended at the same time as mastopexy in order to achieve optimal aesthetic results. This will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Notes: Mastopexy does not stop the aging process of the breast and gravity will continue to affect the breasts following surgery. Future weight gain or loss and future pregnancies will also affect the breasts and may lead to the requirement for revision surgery in the future. Mastopexy does not interfere with mammograms and does not impact or alter your risk for developing a future breast cancer. All potential complications will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Facelift

Who is a candidate for facelift surgery (Rhytidectomy): Both men and women experience a loss of fullness of the face and drooping of the skin of the face forming folds around the mouth and chin (nasolabial folds and jowls). This leads to an aged and hollowed appearance of the face. Facelift surgery can rejuvenated your appearance by lifting the drooping facial skin and fat and smoothing out the folds that cause an aged appearance.

Planned Results: A more rested and youthful appearance with decreased drooping of the facial skin.

Procedure Decription: Facelift surgery is done as a day surgery under general anesthetic. You must have an adult drive you home and stay with you over night. Private nursing services can be arranged through U Cosmetic if necessary for an additional fee.

There are several different methods of facelift surgery and the length of scar will depend on the amount of correction needed – this will be discussed with you are your consultation. Permanent internal sutures will be placed to reposition your facial fat and a combination of dissolving and nondissolving stitches will be placed in your skin. You will have 2 small drains to ensure that no blood or fluid accumulates under the skin.

Recuperation and Healing: You will be required to wear a special garment for one month following surgery and this will be provided by U Cosmetic. The drains will be removed in 4 to 5 days and you will be given detailed instructions on how to care for the drains. You should sleep with the head of your bed elevated to help decrease swelling and icepacks can be used in the first 24 hours to decrease swelling. You can expect some swelling, bruising and discomfort and you will be sent home with prescription medications to help keep you comfortable. It is not uncommon to have some numbness in your face for a few weeks following the surgery. Once the stitches have come out, Kelocote scar gel is recommended for optimal scar formation. Sun protection is extremely important to prevent permanent discolouration of the scars.

Options and Considerations: Optimal facial rejuvenation may need to be achieved through a combination of procedures: blepharoplasty, forehead lift, neck lift. As well, face lift surgery will not improve the texture or blotchiness of your skin. Facelift may be complimented by photorejuvenation, Pixel laser skin resurfacing or chemical peels. Often adding volume back to the face improves the outcome, this can be done through micro fat grafiing or Teosyal or Esthelis injectable fillers. If you do not want the recovery time associated with surgery or are looking for a more subtle correction in skin laxity you may be a candidate for the Accent skin tightening treatments.

Notes: Your results can best be maintained through a home skin care routine. Your optimal routine will be customized for you and products recommended. Please note that facelift surgery does not stop the aging process, gravity and sun exposure will continue to affect your skin and appearance. You may require revision surgery in the future. All potential complications will be discussed at your consultation.

Neck lift

Who is a candidate for neck lift surgery? Many people experience a drooping of the neck skin and development of fullness or folds of skin under the chin (the “turkey gobbler”), this can add years on to your appearance. Neck lift surgery is for medically fit individuals looking to improve the appearance of their neck.

Planned Results: Decreased fullness of fat and decreased excess skin of the neck and restored jaw line contour.

Procedure Description: There are several different ways to complete a neck lift. Neck lift is always performed under general anesthetic. You will need an adult to drive you home and stay the night with you. Private nursing care can be arranged through U Cosmetic for an additional fee.

The incisions used will depend on the amount of excess skin and fat to be removed as well as other procedures planned for the same surgery. Possible incisions include: under the chin, behind the ears and an extension of facelift incisions. Incisions will be closed with nondissolving sutures which will be removed in 5 to 7 days. Permanent, nondissolving stitches may be placed with the deep tissues of the neck to improve the contour.

Recuperation and Healing: You can expect to have swelling, bruising and some discomfort. You will be discharged home with prescription medications to keep you comfortable. You will be required to wear a special garment following the surgery for 4 weeks and this will be provided by U Cosmetic. You may have drains in place following the surgery and you will be given detailed instructions on how to care for the drains.

Notes; Neck lift surgery is often combined with other surgeries such as facelift and submental liposuction (liposuction under the chin) in order to achieve optimal rejuvenation. Neck lift surgery will not affect the texture of the neck skin or any discolouration or blotchiness. Photorejuvenation, Pixel laser resurfacing or chemical peels follow the neck lift surgery in order to improve the overall appearance. Sun protection is extremely important as is a home skincare routine. A skin care routine will be customized for you and products recommended. The most appropriate incision to help you achieve your goals will be discussed at your consultation.

Regardless of the incision, forehead lift is completed under general anesthetic as a day surgery. You are required to have an adult drive you home and spend the night with you. Private nursing care can be arranged through U Cosmetic if necessary.

Recuperation and Healing: You can expect some swelling, bruising and discomfort. You will be sent home with prescription medications to keep you comfortable, You may apply ice to decrease the swelling in the first 24 hours and you should keep your head elevated to help with swelling. You are encouraged to return to your usual daily activities as soon as possible, but avoid increasing your blood pressure for 48 hours. Prolonged bedrest and inactivity can lead to complications.

Options and Considerations: Forehead lift can be combined with other procedures such as: blepharoplasty, face lift, and neck lift. Forehead lift will not improve the texture or blotchiness of your complexion or improve sun damaged skin. Photorejuvenation, Pixel laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels and BotoxÒ may enhance the surgical outcome. Sun protection and a home skin routine is extremely important in enhancing the results, a skin care routine will be customized for you and products recommended. The incisions will be closed with internal, dissolving stitches. You will have a dressing in place and there may be drains in place to make sure no fluid accumulates behind the incisions.

Recuperation and Healing: You can expect some swelling, bruising and discomfort. You will be sent home with prescription medication to keep you comfortable. You will be required to wear a special garment for 4 weeks after the surgery and this will be provided by U Cosmetic. You are encouraged to return to your usual daily activities as soon as possible. Options and Considerations: Lower lid blepharoplasty can be combined with other facial procedures such as upper lid blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, facelift, neck lift. Lower lid blepharoplasty will not improve crow’s feet or nasolabial folds. Botox and Teosyal therapies may improve overall facial rejuvenation. Lower lid blepharoplasty will not change the texture of facial skin or improve the evenness of your complexion.
