Hyaluronan Gel Dermal Filler
Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the skin as part of collagen and elastin and is a powerful volumizing and moisturizing agent. The amount and quality of hyaluronic acid in the skin and underlying soft tissue decreases with age and along with other factors such as sun exposure, social habits of smoking and drinking alcohol, bone loss, genetics and sleep positions can cause the skin to dry out and loose elasticity and volume, forming wrinkles or folds.
Hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers are made from bacterial fermentation and so are much less likely to cause the adverse reactions of earlier animal-based fillers. Their reduced protein and bacterial endotoxin levels result in less hypersensitivity reactions and swelling.
Dermal fillers are used to replace volume loss and smooth out wrinkles around the eyes, nose or mouth, or to enhance areas such as lips. Even though the concern may be for volume loss or wrinkles around the nose or mouth area, it is very important to replace and maintain the volume loss in the cheek area as sagging in the cheeks can accentuate folds around the nose and mouth. Filling the cheek area can often lead to improvement in the folds or wrinkles around the nose or mouth and will help to maintain a pleasing shape to the face. Over time the hyaluronic acid dermal fillers is broken down by your own enzymes called hyaluronidases that naturally remodel our own collagen and elastin.
Hyaluronic fillers come in a wide range of products specifically designed for different areas of the face and body. Fine lines around the eyes and mouth and crepy skin on the face, neck and chest can be treated with fine line filler using meso-hydration techniques by putting the filler into the very superficial layers of the skin. Cheek volume replacement and softening of folds around the nose and mouth and chin creases are done with filler that is more dense and cross-linked. Volume and definition can be given to thin lips or can be used to enhance lips. Some depressed scars can be treated with filler as well. When treating certain areas, local anesthetic or nerve blocks may be used to numb the area prior to treatment and some fillers can contain local anesthetic in the syringe. Fillers can last six to twelve months on average and long-acting filler can last twelve to eighteen months or longer. Depending on the areas treated and whether or not it is your first treatment, fine line filler, regular filler or long-acting filler may be chosen for your treatment. Having filler treatments will stimulate your own collagen and elastin production eventually allowing longer time between treatments. Maintaining your filler volume regularly will also help to prolong results. It is completely natural to have facial asymmetry and filler is used to enhance your own natural look not to make you look “perfect”. Although good results are expected, with the emphasis on improvement rather than perfection, every person is unique and it is impossible to guarantee results.
Other options for treating loss of facial volume or wrinkles include Botulinum Toxin A injections for wrinkle prevention, Radiofrequency skin tightening, Carboxytherapy or surgery/fat grafting for wrinkles and volume loss. As this is an elective procedure, not having a treatment is also an option. Medical grade skin care products can help to reverse some the skin damage that has built up over the years and treat and prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Combining treatments may further enhance and prolong results, for example Botulinum Toxin A upper lip treatment and hyaluronic filler in the lip. Adding medical grade skin care to any filler treatment will help to maximize and lengthen results. There may be other options not listed.
